From March, 2023 to August, 2023, MSD United Way Vietnam implemented the construction of a sanitary water supply system for the people of Ban Chum Nua. After 5 months of implementation, the water supply project was completed and put into use, providing clean water to 134 households with 563 people in Ban Chum Nua, Muong Chieng commune, Da Bac district, Hoa Binh.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

I. General information<\/h2>\n

1. Implementation Context:<\/h3>\n

Chum Nua village is one of the most disadvantaged villages in M\u01b0\u1eddng Chi\u1ec1ng commune, Da Bac district, Hoa Binh province. Currently, the village has 134 households with 563 people (including 280 women, 143 children, and ethnic minorities (Tay ethnic) make up 90%). Notably, the percentage of poor and near-poor households in the village is very high, with 62 poor households (46.2%) and 34 near-poor households (25.3%).<\/p>\n

The water supply system in Ban Chum Nua was constructed with state investment starting in 2009. Initially, after the construction, all residents in the village had access to clean water. However, after many years of storms and natural disasters, the infrastructure has gradually deteriorated and is no longer sufficient to supply water to the villagers. Currently, the system is almost completely degraded, with damaged and broken water pipes that no longer allow for proper water flow. The water storage tanks are cracked and leaking, causing contamination of the water source and surrounding environment.<\/p>\n

The people in the village have repeatedly proposed to the relevant authorities and the People's Committee of the commune to repair the system, but it has not been possible to allocate resources due to the limited budget. Furthermore, the economic conditions of the people in Ban Chum Nua are still challenging, and they lack the ability to contribute to the repair and upgrade of the system. As a result, the villagers have had to cope by diverting water from small streams or using drilled wells. However, the water sources from these streams and wells are not sanitary due to the production processes and the presence of limestone in the area. The long-term use of these water sources has caused many difficulties in the lives of the people in Ban Chum Nua, with many residents, especially children, suffering from skin, eye, and digestive system diseases. According to data provided by the health station and the People's Committee of Muong Chieng commune, on average, 20% of children in the commune suffer from eye diseases (like trachoma), skin diseases, and digestive infections every year. Additionally, if the system is not repaired and restored in time, there is a risk that it may never be recovered. The people here will face even greater challenges.<\/p>\n

Based on the current water usage situation and the difficulties faced by the people of Ban Chum Nua, MSD United Way Vietnam and RIC have raised funds through Momo to construct a sanitary water supply system for the villagers. This project aims to help the residents and children improve their access to clean water for daily use and enhance their living conditions.<\/p>\n

2. Project implementation period: From March, 2023 to August, 2023.<\/h3>\n

3. Method of project implementation:<\/h3>\n

\u2013 Assign the people of Ban Chum Nua to manage and implement the project under the community-led approach, overseeing the entire process of project execution.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Local authorities at all levels and project staff from the RIC Center provide support in methods and technical expertise.<\/p>\n

II. ACHIEVEMENTS:<\/h2>\n

After 5 months of implementation, the water supply project for the people of Ban Chum Nua, Muong Chieng commune, Da Bac district, Hoa Binh has been completed and is now in use. The achieved results are as follows:<\/p>\n

1) Regarding construction scale:<\/h3>\n

Completed as planned and initially committed including:<\/p>\n

\u2013 Constructed a water filtration tank at the source (2.5m long, 2.5m wide, 1.5m high) using rubble stone and reinforced concrete with grade 200 cement.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Installed a new 700m water pipeline using HPDE plastic pipes with a diameter of 60mm and 400m of HPDE plastic pipes with a diameter of 32mm.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Upgraded 03 water storage tanks in the residential area: repaired cracks and leaks, replaced valves and water control faucets, and routed water to the households.<\/p>\n

2) About the beneficiary:<\/h3>\n

The project, upon completion, has provided sufficient water for daily use as initially planned, covering 134 households with 563 people (including 280 women, 143 children; 62 poor households \u2013 accounting for 46.2%, and 34 near-poor households \u2013 accounting for 25.3%).<\/p>\n

3) About management:<\/h3>\n

Currently, the community group of Ban Chum Nua and the People's Committee of M\u01b0\u1eddng Chi\u1ec1ng commune have met and agreed to establish a management and operation team for the water supply system, consisting of 5 members (3 men, 2 women) to operate and maintain the system regularly.
