WATER AMBASSADOR – JOIN HANDS TO BRING CLEAN WATER TO TA LAO VILLAGE

I. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROJECT:

  1. Implementation context:

Water has always been an indispensable source of life for humans. For those living in urban areas, the use of clean water is considered a matter of course without any obstacles. However, for many people living in mountainous areas and remote areas, clean water is still an extremely luxurious thing.

In early 2021, we came to Ta Lao village, Quang Tri. Ta Lao is one of the particularly difficult mountainous villages of Ta Long commune, Dakrong district, Quang Tri province with 89 households, 405 people (47 poor households and 6 near-poor households), 100% of households are Van Kieu ethnic minority people. The water supply system for people in the village was severely damaged after the historic flood in 2020 and there is still no solution to fix it. The lack of water and the use of unsanitary domestic water are serious problems, with no way out for the people here.

Current status of local water works

Lack of clean water has seriously affected people's daily lives. Using polluted water causes serious diseases such as diarrhea, digestive diseases, eye pain, kidney stones, etc. According to local health statistics, the incidence of these diseases in adults and children in Ta Lao has increased compared to previous years.

To have water for daily use, families have to walk 2-3 km on mountain roads to carry water from streams for use. Especially in the dry season, people have to line up and share buckets of water. Women have to spend more time fetching water, so they have less time to take care of themselves, rest, entertain themselves and participate in community activities. Spending a lot of time fetching water also reduces people's productivity and livelihoods.

Women have to go far to fetch buckets of water for use.

2. Project implementation time: March, 2021

3. Method of project implementation:

– Giao cho người dân khu vực thôn Tà Lao tổ chức thực hiện công trình theo hình thức Cộng đồng quản lý toàn bộ quá trình thực hiện công trình.

– Local authorities at all levels, Hoc Mon Ceporer and Long Thanh Commune Red Cross Society provide support in methods and techniques.

On March 22th, 2021, with the support of MoMo e-Wallet, the Management and Sustainable Development Research Institute (MSD) and the Center for Community Development Initiatives Research (RIC) successfully raised 80,000,000 VND to build a clean water supply system for Ta Lao village, Ta Long commune, Dakrong district, Quang Tri province.

Immediately after receiving the donation, MSD Institute and RIC Center supported the villagers in surveying the current situation, making plans to implement the water project and establishing a self-managed community group, guiding the community group in planning, estimating and providing technical advice on construction. Currently, clean water has reached the village and the villagers of Ta Lao village can use it.

In addition to the donated money, the water project in Ta Lao also received other sources of support. Therefore, MSD Institute and RIC Center supported the construction of an additional clean water system for Nguoc village, Ta Long commune, Dakrong district, Quang Tri province. Nguoc village is also a disadvantaged village of Ta Long commune with 41 households living, including 19 poor households, 4 near-poor households and 100% of the population being Van Kieu ethnic people. Similar to Ta Lao village, the water supply system for people in Nguoc village was almost completely damaged after the historic flood in 2020. To have water for daily use, households are having to use unsanitary water sources from drilled wells and polluted streams near the production area.

With the remaining amount after supporting Ta Lao village, MSD Institute and RIC Center will support the people of Nguoc village: repair 1 upstream filter tank: renovate to prevent water leakage; Upgrade 10 water tanks in residential areas: re-plaster the tanks to prevent water leakage, replace the faucet valve system at the tanks; Replace broken pipes, replace elbows, faucet valves and lifting pillars from the upstream.
