Launch Event: Planting 1 Hectare of Mangrove Forest to Green Hung Long Islet, Vinh Long

On July 29, MSD United Way Vietnam hosted the launch event “Planting 1 Hectare of Mangrove Forest to Green Hung Long Islet, Vinh Long Province.” A total of 2,500 mangrove apple trees were planted, contributing not only to the restoration of coastal ecosystems but also marking an important milestone in spreading the message of sustainability to the community.

The event received strong support from local authorities and the community, with the participation of more than 20 representatives from partner organizations and individuals passionate about environmental protection and climate change. Participants had the opportunity to directly experience planting mangrove apple trees – a pioneering species in preventing soil erosion, reducing storm impacts, and safeguarding coastal areas.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Trần Vân Anh, representative of MSD United Way Vietnam, shared: “We believe that each tree planted today is a seed of hope for future generations. Mangrove forests are not only natural barriers against disasters but also symbols of regeneration – of the land, the water, and the community itself. What I value most about this project is not merely the number of trees planted, but the way it is being implemented: together, through partnerships among government, businesses, civil society, and local communities. I am confident this is a model of sustainable development in action and proof that we can collectively create powerful impact.”

Highlighting the urgent need for the project in Vinh Long Province, which often suffers from storms, salinity intrusion, and severe soil erosion, Mr. Nguyen Van Thuong, Head of the Economic Division of the People’s Committee of Long Hoa Commune, Vinh Long Province, stated: “Hung Long Islet holds great geographical importance, with nearly 100 hectares of alluvial land. Planting mangrove forests here plays a vital role in stabilizing the soil, buffering waves and winds, and creating favorable conditions for local livelihoods. The Environmental Ambassador project is among the pioneering initiatives in planting and maintaining mangrove forests on Hung Long Islet. We hope to continue receiving support and collaboration to expand the forested area, contributing to climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods for local people.”

MC Hanh Trang, a participant with keen interest, shared her personal experience: “As someone passionate about environmental activities, I feel fortunate to have discovered the Environmental Ambassador project. This was also my first time planting mangroves. Each tree I planted today brought me immense joy and pride, knowing I could contribute, even in a small way, to such a meaningful journey. These mangroves will stand as a shield against storms and salinity, creating a safe and sustainable environment that improves the quality of life for local residents. It was a truly wonderful experience, and I look forward to joining future trips.”

A local resident, Mr. Hung, added: “Having more mangroves makes life here much easier. The forest shields us from waves and winds, making aquatic resources more stable. Families can catch shrimp and crabs, and we can grow vegetables like cucumbers and watermelons along the shore. Thanks to the mangrove forest, our community can earn additional income.”

This initiative marks an important step forward in MSD United Way Vietnam’s efforts to restore coastal forests and demonstrates the strength of collaboration between organizations, businesses, and communities working hand in hand.

MSD United Way Vietnam extends heartfelt gratitude to our partners MoMo, Zalopay and Dutch Business Association Vietnam – DBAV as well as to all the “Environmental Ambassadors” who have accompanied this project. Your support and commitment are the driving force behind our mission to sow seeds of hope and expand these meaningful green spaces.
